I’m Alex Harper, an ecologist, birding guide, and interpretive naturalist who helps people better understand the ecosystems around them.
My work combines bird ecology, conservation, environmental education, and field interpretation to create experiences that are scientifically grounded, engaging, and deeply connected to place. Through live courses, guided walks, workshops, and consulting, I work with individuals, organizations, schools, and conservation groups to foster ecological understanding and meaningful engagement with nature.
At the heart of Nature in Mind is a simple idea:
when people learn to pay closer attention to nature, they begin to care more deeply about protecting it.
Immersive field experiences that help participants develop identification skills, ecological understanding, and deepen observation. Multiday intenstive workshops are among my favorite.
Live online and in-person educational experiences focused on birds, ecology, conservation, and natural history. I have a new online community that naturalists, birders, and avian biologists will all benefit from.
Presentations and workshops on birding, ecology, conservation, listening, and natural history interpretation.
Support for nonprofits, schools, agencies, and organizations seeking to expand. I have a special place for National Audubon and community Audubon/Bird Alliance chapters.
Nature in Mind was created from the belief that ecological understanding changes the way we move through the world. I am fortunate enough to have had my curiosity fed from an early childhood on. Reptiles, dolphins, and birds especially grabbed my attention early. I'm able to work with and around these animals today, but it is the world of birds that drew me in the most.
I am also grateful for the mentors and teachers that I had, especially from the birding community and Audubon chapters. I've been able to see much of the world and get to know many of the animals that inhabit it. I couldn't be where I am today without all the support I've received every step of the way.
Nature in Mind is how I pay it forward.
